About the Indian Postal PIN Code System
The Postal Index Number (PIN) is a 6-digit numbering code system introduced on 15 August 1972 by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar, an additional secretary in the Union Ministry of Communications. The system was designed to eliminate postal confusion caused by duplicate city names, multilingual hand-written addresses, and regional dialects.
Digit 1: Regional Zone
Indicates one of 9 postal zones across northern, western, southern, eastern, and functional Army postal systems.
Digit 2 & 3: Postal Sub-Zone / District
Together with the first digit, the first three digits pinpoint the sorting postal district.
Digits 4, 5 & 6: Specific Delivery Office
The final three digits route the parcel or letter directly to the local Branch Office (BO), Sub Office (SO), or Head Office (HO).
