High on the freezing heights of the Siachen Glacier, deep inside the dense jungles of the North-East, or across the scorching sand dunes of Rajasthan, an Indian soldier opens a handwritten letter or a box of festival sweets sent from thousands of kilometers away. Behind this emotional connection stands one of the world's most disciplined military logistics bodies: the Army Postal Service (APS).
1. Why the Military Postal System Is Unique: Postal Zone 9
When India introduced the 6-digit Postal Index Number (PIN) system on August 15, 1972, the entire country was partitioned into geographical zones. Zones 1 through 8 map to civilian states:
- Civilian Zones (1–8): Fixed geographical boundaries (e.g. Zone 1 covers Delhi & Punjab; Zone 4 covers Maharashtra & MP).
- Military Zone (9): Completely non-geographical and mobile. Every PIN code starting with the digit 9 belongs exclusively to the Army Postal Service.
2. The Two Central Gateways: 56 APO & 99 APO
All mail originating from across India destined for military service personnel is routed through two massive, fortified hubs known as Central Base Post Offices (CBPO):
| Army Post Office | Central Base Post Office | PIN Code | Geographic Routing Gateway | Military Operational Command Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 56 APO | 1 Central Base Post Office (1 CBPO) | 900056 | New Delhi | Northern Command, Western Command, South-Western Command, Central Command & Southern Command |
| 99 APO | 2 Central Base Post Office (2 CBPO) | 900099 | Kolkata | Eastern Command & North-Eastern states (Assam, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur) |
3. The Golden Rule of Military Mail Addressing
Writing an address for armed forces personnel requires strict compliance with defense security protocols. Never write the name of the civilian town, city, or state where the soldier is posted. Doing so compromises unit locations and violates defense security guidelines.
No: 15487920X
Rank: Havildar / Subedar / Major
Name: Vikram Singh
Unit: 14 Rajputana Rifles
C/O: 56 APO
PIN: 900056
If the soldier's unit is stationed in the East or North-East, replace the last two lines with:
C/O: 99 APO
PIN: 900099
4. How the Mail Traverses to the Frontlines
The journey of an APO letter involves a seamless baton exchange between civilian postal workers and uniformed military personnel:
- Civilian Booking: A family member books a letter or parcel at any neighborhood post office across India addressed to C/O 56 APO (PIN 900056).
- National Transit: India Post transports the mailbag via Speed Post air freight or railway express to 1 CBPO New Delhi or 2 CBPO Kolkata.
- Military Decryption & Sorting: At the CBPO, APS military personnel decipher unit codes and re-sort mail into individual Field Post Office (FPO) batches.
- Tactical Forwarding: The bags are dispatched via military aircraft, supply convoys, mule trains, or foot patrols to forward combat outposts.
- Final Handover: The Unit Dak Runner delivers the mail directly to the soldier.
5. Important Guidelines for Senders
- Book Only via India Post: Private commercial couriers do not have access to APOs or forward military cantonments. Always book through India Post (Speed Post or Registered Parcel).
- Rakhi & Festival Envelopes: India Post provides special water-resistant, reinforced Rakhi envelopes during festival seasons destined for 56 APO and 99 APO at subsidized rates.
- No Contraband: Never send alcohol, flammable materials, electronic tracking gadgets, or cash inside parcels.
